Bullion Knots

Bullion knots are decorative knots that are often used to create textured designs and add dimension to embroidery projects. They are commonly used in floral motifs and other intricate designs. Bullion knots are a little more challenging than some other embroidery stitches, but with a little practice, anyone can master this stitch.

How to do the Bullion Knots

  1. Start the stitch: Bring the needle up through the fabric where you want to start the knot. Hold the thread down with your non-dominant hand to keep it in place.
  2. Stitch forward: Bring the needle up through the fabric again one stitch length away from the first stitch, do not pull the thread all the way, instead leave a loop.
  3. Stitch backward: Bring the needle up through the fabric again where you started the first stitch. Keep the needle halfway through the fabric. Do not pull your needle through all the way.
  4. Wrap the thread: Take the working thread from the loop in step 2 and wrap it around the needle several times, pushing the wraps down the shaft of the needle as you wrap. Remember not to wrap the thread too tightly around the needle. The length of the wraps will depend on the distance of the stitch you made in step 2. You can compare the length of your wraps to the desired length by laying the needle parallel to the fabric. Remember to secure your wraps with your non-dominant hands
  5. Remove the wraps from the needle: Using your non-dominant hand, gently hold the wrapped thread in place while pulling the needle through the fabric.
  6. Stitch forward: Bring the needle back into the fabric at the end of the stitch you made in step 2. The knot will lie on top of your fabric along the line of your stitch.
  7. Repeat: Continue stitching forwards, backwards, wrapping and stitching forward until your design is complete (steps 2-6).
  8. End the stitch: Once you have completed the knot, insert the needle back into the fabric close to where the last stitch came up, and tie off the thread.

Tips

  • Use a sharp needle to make it easier to insert the needle through the wraps.
  • If you are having difficulty with the wraps staying in place, try using a needle with a larger eye to make it easier to thread the wraps through.
  • If you are having trouble with the knots puckering or distorting, try using a hoop or frame to keep the fabric taut while you work.
  • Practice on scrap fabric before attempting the stitch on your project to get a feel for how many wraps you need to create the desired size knot.
  • Be patient and take your time with this stitch. It may take a few tries to get the hang of it, but with practice, you’ll be creating beautiful bullion knots in no time!
